Índice de Dominancia Narrativa (NDI)Narrative Dominance Index (NDI)

El NDI mide, por concepto (petróleo, gas, CCS, hidrógeno, renovables) y por año, cuál de los dos marcos opuestos de ese concepto domina en la prensa: el del movimiento climático (−1) o el de la industria fósil (+1). Es una balanza normalizada entre los dos polos:

The NDI measures, by concept (oil, gas, CCS, hydrogen, renewables) and by year, which of the concept's two opposing frames dominates in the press: the climate movement's (−1) or the fossil industry's (+1). It is a normalised balance between the two poles:

Ejemplo (petróleo, 2026): el marco de necesidad aparece en el 2,12% de los titulares y el de culpa en el 1,19% → NDI = (2,12 − 1,19) / (2,12 + 1,19) = +0,28.

El NDI compara los dos polos entre sí, no con el total de la cobertura. Solo ~3,3% de los titulares sobre petróleo activan alguno de los dos marcos en 2026; el cruce significa que, entre esos, el polo de la industria pasa por delante — no que la mayoría de la cobertura encuadre el petróleo como necesidad. Mide dominancia relativa, no share of voice.The NDI compares the two poles against each other, not against total coverage. Only ~3.3% of oil headlines carry either frame in 2026; the crossing means that, among those, the industry pole moves ahead — not that most coverage frames oil as a necessity. It measures relative dominance, not share of voice.

FCI — índice separadoFCI — a separate index

El FCI (intensidad de conflicto de marcos) es distinto del NDI y no entra en su cálculo: FCI = (Smov + Sind) · (1 + Pind + Pmov), donde S es la prevalencia del concepto en el corpus de cada actor. Mide cuán disputado está el concepto (actores + prensa) y sirve para ordenar los battlegrounds, no para decidir quién gana.

The FCI (frame-conflict intensity) is distinct from the NDI and is not part of its computation: FCI = (Smov + Sind) · (1 + Pind + Pmov), where S is the concept's prevalence in each actor's corpus. It measures how contested the concept is (actors + press) and is used to rank battlegrounds, not to decide who wins.

Cobertura de medios. Los 56 medios son mayoritariamente de EE. UU. y Reino Unido, con presencia europea (El País, Le Monde, DW, Euractiv, Politico Europe) y algún internacional (Al Jazeera, SCMP, Sydney Morning Herald). Outlet coverage. The 56 outlets are predominantly US and UK, with European presence (El País, Le Monde, DW, Euractiv, Politico Europe) and some international (Al Jazeera, SCMP, Sydney Morning Herald). It is an international, English-language-predominant sample — which is why the brief says "international", not "global".

03 · La codificaciónThe coding

Cómo se construyen y detectan los marcosHow frames are built and detected

Construcción del codebook. Los polos no se asignan a priori desde categorías genéricas. Se derivan y calibran sobre la comunicación real de los dos actores (los codebooks del movimiento y de la industria), siguiendo el procedimiento de framing de la investigación peer-reviewed de Díaz-Pérez, y después se aplican simétricamente al corpus periodístico.

Codebook construction. The poles are not assigned a priori from generic categories. They are derived and calibrated on the two actors' real communication (the movement's and the industry's codebooks), following the framing procedure of Díaz-Pérez's peer-reviewed research, then applied symmetrically to the press corpus.

Detección. Cada concepto tiene dos polos opuestos — p. ej. petróleo: necesidad (solución energética) frente a culpa (causa del cambio climático). Un marco solo cuenta cuando la entidad (petróleo, Shell, fracking…) y la valencia (necesidad vs. culpa) coinciden en el mismo titular dentro de una ventana de contexto acotada. "Crisis energética" por sí sola no activa el marco de necesidad del petróleo. Los patrones usan límites de palabra.

Detection. Each concept has two opposing poles — e.g. oil: necessity (energy solution) vs. blame (cause of climate change). A frame only counts when the entity (oil, Shell, fracking…) and the valence (necessity vs. blame) co-occur in the same headline within a bounded context window. "Energy crisis" alone does not trigger the oil-necessity frame. Patterns use word boundaries.

Incertidumbre (bootstrap). Cada NDI reportado lleva un IC 95% por 2.000 réplicas bootstrap, remuestreando titulares dentro de cada concepto-año. Reproducible: petróleo 2026 = +0,28, IC 95% [+0,07, +0,47] (excluye 0).

Uncertainty (bootstrap). Every reported NDI carries a 95% CI from 2,000 bootstrap replications, resampling headlines within each concept-year. Reproducible: oil 2026 = +0.28, 95% CI [+0.07, +0.47] (excludes 0).

Validación de codificación · precision. Sobre una muestra estratificada de 227 titulares marcados (hasta 25 por polo), la precision global era del 80%. Los polos con más ruido —RenewablesDoubt 43%, HydrogenDoubt 69%, GasSolution 76%, GasBlame 84%, que marcaban como duda/solución titulares favorables o de mercado— se corrigieron en el codebook (v3) → los cuatro al 100% en re-test (con la función real), sin perder verdaderos positivos. Precision global tras los fixes: ~91% en la muestra de ajuste, y ~89% en un test held-out de titulares no vistos (fuera de muestra) — el codebook generaliza, no está sobreajustado. Los polos del hallazgo del petróleo son sólidos: culpa 96%, necesidad 76% — y 100% en 2026; los falsos positivos de necesidad se concentran en 2020–2023, no en 2026, por lo que no fabrican el cruce. Recall: en 150 titulares aleatorios el codebook marca el 3,3% (= tasa base, sin sobre-marcar); captura los marcos claros y se pierde algunos implícitos (recall ~57% sobre una base pequeña). Como el NDI es un ratio de dos polos medidos con el mismo criterio conservador, ese nivel de recall no sesga el cruce. Codificación con codebook de diccionarios (método validado). Validación: muestra de precisión etiquetada con asistencia de modelo y contrastada con un spot-check humano independiente (40 titulares: 88% de acuerdo, Cohen's κ=0.73 · sustancial; los desacuerdos, en casos ambiguos).Coding validation · precision. On a stratified sample of 227 flagged headlines (up to 25 per pole), overall precision was 80%. The noisiest poles —RenewablesDoubt 43%, HydrogenDoubt 69%, GasSolution 76%, GasBlame 84%, which flagged favourable or market headlines as doubt/solution— were fixed in the codebook (v3) → all four at 100% on re-test (with the production function), no true positives lost. Overall precision after the fixes: ~91% on the tuning sample, and ~89% on a held-out test of unseen headlines (out-of-sample) — the codebook generalises, it is not overfit. The poles behind the oil finding are solid: blame 96%, necessity 76% — and 100% in 2026; necessity false positives cluster in 2020–2023, not 2026, so they do not manufacture the crossing. Recall: on 150 random headlines the codebook flags 3.3% (= the base rate, no over-flagging); it catches clear frames and misses some implicit ones (recall ~57% on a small base). Because the NDI is a ratio of two poles measured with the same conservative bar, this recall level does not bias the crossing. Coding with a dictionary-based codebook (validated method). Validation: a precision sample labelled with model assistance and checked against an independent human spot-check (40 headlines: 88% agreement, Cohen's κ=0.73 · substantial; disagreements on ambiguous cases).

Dentro de la cobertura de clima y energía, la proporción de titulares encuadrados a través del clima cae del 74% (2019) al 26% (2026). Es una cuota (share) año a año, no un recuento absoluto: mide qué fracción del debate energético-climático se cuenta como historia climática. 2019 es el máximo de la serie; 2026, aun siendo año parcial, es el mínimo.

Within climate-and-energy coverage, the share of headlines framed through climate falls from 74% (2019) to 26% (2026). It is a year-by-year share, not an absolute count: it measures what fraction of the energy-climate debate is told as a climate story. 2019 is the peak of the series; 2026, though a partial year, is the low.
